|Born Of Fire, our story|
We lost everything to the fire that destroyed our house. My journal followed our progress from devastation to recovery and turned into the book "Born Of Fire". There is a lot of good information about what to do and what to avoid in a similar situation.
The Worst Day Of My Life
Running up to the front door, my heart is pounding. I opened the door and it felt like eternity stopped. Everything in my house was engulfed in black... Nothing would ever be the same again.
There was much confusion, a mountain of paperwork and devastating loss to deal with. At first you think “it’s only material stuff” but this stuff was to a great extend our memories, our accomplishments and our lives, not to mention the guilt of losing our birds and cat.
4.20.2 It’s been over five months. Our house is still exactly the same.
7.11.2 Going back to the house two to three times a week is reliving my nightmare. There is a dead yard and a burned house. When watering, it seems like Dazi, our cat, is sitting under the bushes, as she used to, getting ready to jump out before the water hits her. She is still here. She had a good life and we miss her.
7.14.2 Grace wrote me through the e-mail, “You should let it go.”
She is right.
Today, I feel better than I have in eight months. I can’t believe I’m saying this but life is good!
Aubri made me a CD that starts with “I believe in miracles...”
In the meantime our parents are dealing with their own challenges of getting older.
8.13.3 Yesterday, Jerald called to tell me that Poldi has a fever of 104.1 and was not doing well. I immediately went over there and found her burning up, INSTANT SHOCK! I put cold compresses on her head and legs, exchanging the compresses every few minutes with cold ones.
My Mother has West Nile Virus.
Trying to make sense of all that happened these last couple of months while, at the same time also dealing with our situation was just absolutely the heaviest burden that I ever had to carry.
1.26.4 Yes, we designed our new house and it shall be Poly Steel and concrete. We follow the whole process and it is very interesting.
I’M THE MASTER OF MY FATE
I’M THE CAPTAIN OF MY SOUL
I offered to help my friend Nancy rescue whatever we could from her mom’s condo in Florida after hurricane Jeanne: We drove along A1A, going south. We see piles of debris along every road in front of most of the buildings. Disaster Restoration trucks are in the driveways. Roofs are covered with blue plastic tarps. A lot of the windows are blown out. In some places, you can see right through the house to the ocean. Jeanne hit with 120 mile-per-hour winds, the same area that was hit by Frances just three weeks earlier.
We opened the door to the condo; it was a lot like stepping into my house three years ago. Everything is ruined.
Thinking back over these three and a half years, it was a continual struggle. Finally a curtain was lifted that had covered our very existence. We are proud to have stood up for what we believed in and that it is over.

How does it feel to be erased?
Imagine walking out of your home today, now
and starting the rest of your life
with the clothes on your back.
Losing your job too,
My life ended abruptly.
